Install OpenTX Companion
In order to backup, restore, update, install OpenTX on your radio, you need to install OpenTX Companion.
Download OpenTX 2.2.3 here. Release Notes. If you get an error about “api-ms-win-crt-runtime-I1-1-0.dll missing” install MS VC++ runtime.
The Files and SD Contents
There are two files we want to back up along with the sd contents. One file will contain the radio setup and model configurations. The other file will be a back up of the current firmware. In a worse case scenario, you can restore your radio to its state before an upgrade or transfer it to another radio of the same model. The SD contents is the entire content on the sd card inside your radio.
Setup Radio for OpenTX Companion
Open OpenTX Companion 2.2.3 on your computer.
Power on your radio.
Plug in your USB cable.
When your radio prompts you to select the USB option, select USB Storage (SD) and hit enter on your radio.
To make sure OpenTX Companion is talking to your radio and that you have the right model selected, click the Read Models and Settings From Radio button.
If you get a message that says “Current selected radio type is not compatible”, make sure you have the correct radio selected in your current OpenTX Companion profile. For help with this message click here. Otherwise proceed.
This will bring up all of the models you have on your current radio. This should be the same as your models list when viewing them from your radio.
Backup Radio Setup And Models
Click the Backup Radio to File button on the left.
Make a folder on your computer to keep you backed up files organized. In our example we have a folder called radio backup on the desktop (1). We are going to save this file as xlitesetupandmodels.bin (2). Save the file.
This file includes your radio setup and your models in one backup file.
Backup Current Firmware
Next click the Read Firmware from Radio button on the left.
Save this file in the same folder as your previous backup(1). This is the firmware backup, make sure you put firmware in the filename. In this example the filename is xlitefirmware2.2.2backup.bin.
You have now backed up your radio settings, models and firmware in two separate files.
Backup SD Contents
SD contents is the entire content on the sd card in your radio. It contains things like audio files and crossfire lua scripts. If you have custom audio or other files, keep that in mind when you update SD contents.
There are two ways you can back up your sd contents. One is by removing the SD card from your radio, putting it in a micro sd reader and plugging it into your computer. You can also plug your radio into your computer and see the sd contents and copy them that way.
Turn your radio on. Plug the radio into your computer.
When your radio prompts you to select the USB option, select USB Storage (SD) and hit enter on your radio.
On your computer you will have two new removable drives show up. The drive letters will vary from computer to computer. In our example, F and E drive are now present.
The drive that we want should have contents similar to the following. In our example, E drive is one we want. We know this because it has a file called opentx.sdcard.version in the root of the drive.
To backup these files, make a folder on your computer labeled “sd card backup”.
Select all the files and right click and copy files from the sd card.
Right click and paste them in the backup folder on your computer. You can also drag and drop them.
When the files finish copying, you have backed up your OpenTX SD contents.
